What to expect at your appointment?
At Ear Care Practice, we provide safe, professional microsuction ear wax removal using modern digital ear care technology.
Every appointment follows a clear, gentle process focused on your comfort, safety, and long-term ear health.
Step 1 – Medical history & digital ear assessment
Your appointment starts with a short medical history to confirm that microsuction is safe for you.
Your ears are then examined using a high-definition digital otoscope, providing a clear, magnified view of the ear canal and eardrum to accurately assess wax build-up and rule out any concerns.
Step 2 – Microsuction ear wax removal
If required, microsuction is performed using medical-grade equipment to gently remove ear wax while maintaining full visual control of the ear canal. The treatment is delivered with care and precision, ensuring professional experience throughout your appointment.
Microsuction is the preferred method because it is:
- Water-free – no syringing or irrigation
- Precise and controlled – performed with a clear, magnified view
- Comfortable for most adults, including hearing aid users
The procedure is usually quick and well-tolerated.
Step 3 – Free hearing screening (included)
Every appointment includes a free hearing screening, providing a helpful overview of your hearing health and supporting early detection of potential changes.
Step 4 – Final check, images & aftercare advice
After treatment, your ears are checked again to confirm that wax has been safely removed. If you wish, before-and-after images can be shown to help you understand the results. You will also receive personalised aftercare advice to help reduce future wax build-up.
All procedures are performed by a trained ear care specialist, fully insured, in a calm and professional environment. Appointments are available in Duston, Northampton, with home visits offered where suitable.

What’s Included in Your Hearing Care Package:
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Is microsuction safe?
Yes. Microsuction is considered the safest method of ear wax removal when performed by a trained professional using medical-grade equipment. It allows direct visualization of the ear canal, reducing the risk of injury or infection. Most adults, including those with hearing aids or sensitive ears, can safely undergo the procedure.
Does it hurt?
Microsuction is generally comfortable and well tolerated. You may feel a slight sensation of vibration or mild pressure, but it is not painful. The procedure is performed gently in a calm environment, and the clinician can adjust the technique to keep you comfortable throughout.
How long does it take?
The procedure is usually quick, taking around 10–20 minutes per ear, depending on the amount of wax. This includes the initial assessment, removal of wax, and aftercare guidance. Most appointments can be completed in a single visit.
Do I need olive oil?
In most cases, pre-treatment ear drops or olive oil are not necessary before microsuction. The procedure allows safe removal of wax directly under visualization. Occasionally, if wax is particularly hard or impacted, your clinician may advise softening drops prior to your appointment, but this is not routine.
Can I have it if I wear hearing aids?
Yes. Microsuction is safe for hearing aid users. It does not use water, unlike traditional ear syringing, so your hearing aids are not affected. Your clinician will take extra care to protect your ears and hearing devices during the procedure.
Do I qualify for the Support Scheme discount?
If you receive Universal Credit or other means-tested benefits (e.g. Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Tax Credits, Income Support, ESA, JSA), you can get earwax removal for £40 per appointment (normally £55)
How to claim:
• Bring proof of benefit (recent statement or app screenshot) and photo ID.
• You must have received a payment in the last month.
• Payment in full is required at the time of booking to secure your appointment.
• Discount applies to up to two household members and in-clinic appointments only.
• Cannot be combined with other promotions.
Limited appointments are available at this reduced rate.
We offer this reduced rate to make professional ear care accessible to everyone.
How often should a person get their ears checked?
For most people, an ear check every 1 to 2 years is sufficient. However, if you experience frequent earwax buildup, hearing difficulties, ear infections, or use hearing aids, more regular check-ups every 3 to 6 months may be needed.
Why is ear care important?
Good ear care prevents wax build-up, infections, and hearing problems. It helps maintain your hearing and balance.
How do I know if I have too much wax?
Signs include muffled hearing, itchiness, ringing, or discomfort. If unsure, book an ear check.
Can ear wax affect my hearing?
Yes, excess wax can block sound and reduce hearing clarity.
What are the signs of an ear infection vs. wax buildup?
Wax buildup causes muffled hearing; infections cause pain, discharge, or fever.
Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?
Yes, especially if you need support or assistance or just simply a company.
What happens during a typical ear cleaning appointment?
We examine your ears, explain the procedure, and gently remove wax using safe methods.
What if I have ear pain or discharge? should I still get my ears cleaned?
Tell us before your appointment. We may recommend medical treatment first.
Can earwax cause dizziness or balance problems?
Yes, impacted wax can affect balance. Removal often improves symptoms.

Preparation Before your Appointment
For the best results, please use olive oil in both ears twice daily for at least three days before your appointment — ideally five days.
This helps soften earwax for a safer, more effective microsuction treatment.
Olive oil is recommended and is available in most local pharmacies.
(Please see Important Safety Information – Olive Oil Drops for any contraindications.)
How to Use Ear Spray?
1. Wash your hands before use.
2. Tilt your head or lie on your side with the affected ear facing upward. Before proceeding to step 3, ensure the pump is working correctly to avoid building pressure in the ear, which could cause discomfort or injury.
3. Apply one or two squirts of Olive oil into the affected ear.
4. Keep your head tilted for 5–10 minutes to allow the drops to penetrate.
5. Wipe away any excess liquid.
6. Repeat the same procedure for the other ear if required or as directed by your healthcare provider.
7. Continue applications twice a day for a minimum of three to five days, or as directed by your healthcare provider.
Note: For more detailed safety information, please refer to the leaflet included with your Olive oil product.
Important Safety Information – Olive Oil Drops
Olive oil drops are recommended to help soften earwax before removal, unless there are known contraindications. For your safety, please note that olive oil drops should not be used if you have any of the following conditions :
- Perforated eardrum (a hole or tear in the eardrum)
- Recent ear surgery
- Active ear infection or discharge from the ear
- Allergy to olive oil or other ingredients in the drops
- Severe ear pain or dizziness — these symptoms should be assessed, as they can sometimes be caused by impacted earwax or other conditions requiring professional evaluation.
Our recommendations are based on clinical training and best practice guidelines to ensure safe and effective care for your ears.
Service is available for adults (18+) only
